Founded in 1994, Phantasm is a Berlin-based viol consort (viol: a renaissance-era precursor to the modern family of stringed instruments) that has garnered many accolades and awards for their 20 albums and groundbreaking performances worldwide. We are excited to welcome them to the Gatineau Hills in partnership with Collines-en-musique as part of their Canadian tour. The program they’ll present features music by J.S. Bach originally written for keyboard, but reimagined by Phantasm for four viols. Hearing keyboard music re-cast for stringed instruments is a little bit like watching a black and white movie in colour – the images are the same, but the coloration dramatically alters how you perceive it.

Featuring:

  • Phantasm Viol Consort

    • Laurence Dreyfus – Founder, director, and treble viol player.

    • Jonathan Manson – Tenor viol.

    • Emilia Benjamin – Treble and tenor viols.

    • Heidi Gröger – Tenor and bass viols, violone.

    • Markku Luolajan-Mikkola – Bass viol. .

This concert is in collaboration with Ottawa Chamberfest

Ottawa Chamberfest has been changing lives through music for over 30 years. What began as a small summer festival has grown into a year-round arts organization. As demand for chamber music grew, Chamberfest launched the Concert Series in 2000, bringing world-class performances to Ottawa each fall, winter, and spring. The series expanded our reach, engaging more artists and audiences and creating another outlet to share music of the highest quality. Today, our three pillars remain: our summer festival, our popular concert series, and our rich community engagement and education programming.
